MasterFormat Specification Divisions (CURRENT)

The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) publishes the MasterFormat, which is the standard that is used most often for formatting construction specifications.

MasterFormat is the protected intellectual property of the Construction Specifications Institute so we cannot provide a fill list of numbers and titles. Unfortunately, CSI no longer makes the list available for free. You can purchase the MasterFormat list from CSI.

MasterFormat uses a three-part number (sometimes four-parts) for classifying construction products into categories. The first two numbers are Divisions, followed by 2 numbers for the Section, and then two more numbers for the sub-section. In some cases, you may also see a two number decimal for sections that need more specific breakdowns. The example below is for Custom Hollow Metal Doors and Frames, which is in Division 8 for Openings.
